Many people wonder about the water they drink every day. Is it safe? Does it taste good? A new study looked at how people across America feel about their tap water. It found that a lot of folks worry about their water.

This study talked to 1,200 grown-ups all over the country in July 2025. They wanted to know what people really thought about their tap water. The results show that more and more people want to make sure their water is good.

Do People Trust Their Tap Water? Not So Much!

How much do Americans trust their tap water? The study found:

  • Only 2 out of 10 people (20%) said they fully trust their water.
  • Almost half (43%) said they somewhat trust it.
  • A big group (30%) said they don't trust it at all!

Most people (more than 6 out of 10, or 64%) worry about their tap water sometimes or often. Only a few (9%) said they never worry. Many people (34%) even think their water is worse now than when they were kids!

What Worries People Most About Their Water?

What people worry about in their water has changed a lot!

Last year, bad stuff in the water (like dirt or chemicals) was the main worry for many. But this new study from 2025 tells a different story:

  • Taste is now the #1 problem for almost half of people (47%)! People want their water to taste fresh and clean.
  • Worries about harmful stuff like lead, PFAS chemicals, and germs also went up (45%). These are things you definitely don't want in your water.
  • Hard water (water that leaves white spots on dishes or makes soap not lather well) is still a worry for 23% of people. But it's not as big a worry as taste or harmful chemicals anymore.

Other things make people worry too:

  • Getting sick (30%)
  • Water having a bad smell (22%)
  • Water looking cloudy or having a weird color (21%)
  • Tiny bits of plastic (called microplastics) in the water (16%)
  • How water makes their skin and hair feel (11%)

How Americans are Fixing Their Water Worries

Because of all these worries, many Americans are now filtering their water. More than 6 out of 10 people (63%) use a water filter at home right now. Many others (27%) are thinking about getting one.

Why Do People Filter Their Water?

The reasons people filter their water line up with their biggest worries:

  • Safety first! Most people (68%) want to get rid of bad stuff in their water to make it safe to drink.
  • Better taste is also very important (58%). Nobody wants yucky-tasting water!
  • Keeping their family healthy comes next (52%).
  • Other reasons: Stop white spots (limescale or mineral buildup) from forming (19%), make water smell better (17%), or help their skin and hair feel better (11%).

How People Filter Their Water is Changing

How people filter their water has changed a lot in just one year!

Last year, most people bought bottled water. But now, fewer people are buying plastic bottles. This is good for the environment!

  • Water pitchers (like Brita or PUR) are now the most popular choice (31%).
  • Filters in fridges are close behind (27%).
  • Bottled water use dropped way down to only 17%.
  • Other ways people filter: filters on their faucet (16%), filters under the sink (9%), or a whole-home water filter (12%). A whole-home filter cleans ALL the water that comes into your house!

  • Using a water filter (26%)
  • Buying bottled water (20%)

  • Last year, more than 6 out of 10 people (63%) had never tested their water.
  • This year, that number is a bit better (54%), but it's still more than half!
  • Only 1 out of 10 people tested their water last year.
